A collection of off-beat stories including erotica, crime, and the unnatural, focused somewhat on the grotesque. "Stormy, Mon Amour" is the story of a woman who leaves her redneck husband to fall in love with a dolphin and give birth to a mermaid. "ReBecca" is about conjoined twins and their first sexual experience. "Boozeanne, Lemme Be" recounts the activities of a small-time thief who lives in the home of unsuspecting workaholics. Other stories include murder and twisted psychology.
Dennis Lehane says of the author, Vicki Hendricks "A fierce and fearless talent."
Florida Gothic Stories edition by Vicki Hendricks Michael Connelly Megan Abbott Literature Fiction eBooks
Hendricks' talent shines brightly in this excellent short story collection. No matter what the subject matter, the writing draws you in. The voice is pitched perfectly. The tone and the pace couldn't be smoother. And there are absolutely no clunkers in this bunch. And there are subjects here you never thought you'd enjoy reading about-- including a tender tale of bestiality, a story of a squatter, the dating habits of Siamese (aka conjoined) twins, strippers in the monkey house, the adventures of mighty Iguana Man, a one-armed alligator, sixteen different kinds of trailer park double indemnity and more.
Are all these people slightly twisted or is this just what goes on in the backwoods of Florida?
There is in these tales a sense of irony and the sardonic whether it's the iguana dressed for a formal ball or the fact that somehow these people's desperate schemes never really seem to work out quite the way they thought they would. These are not dark takes, however. There is a brightness to them.
All in all, a terrific collection you gotta read.

Florida Gothic Stories edition by Vicki Hendricks Michael Connelly Megan Abbott Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews
I'm love this collection of Short Stories. "Rebecca" was realistic and touching. I couldn't put it down. I liked "Boozanne, Lemme Be" a lot too. I do believe Ms. Hendricks is a latent trailer livin', bingo playin' ass scratchin', scotch drinkin', hell raiser, with an intellect. Whatever she is, she has a circus goin' on in her head.... and they're all fornicating in there!!
Ms. Hendricks joins Mo Hayder and a few other women at the top of my tough guy list. She is a noir author, a horror author, hell...just a damned good author.
I have read all of Ms. Hendricks' books and each one is a treat. She has an original mind and writes beautiful prose. I loved these stories because of their unpredictability. But also because there is a beating heart in each one. And Miami Purity has to be one of my ten top favorite books of all time.
I bought this collection of stories because of Megan Abbot's forward, in which she recommends Vicki Hendricks. Hendricks is hardboiled noir at its edgy best. I loved her desperate characters and lamented their sure sorry fates. Was pleased the collection contained an afterward by another super talented writer, Michael Connelly. I devoured these stories, and immediately bought another collecction of Hendricks' stories.
I would not recommend this book for anyone to read. It is a total waste of time. I could not finish them. They are not believiable
The author, Vicki Hendricks, must have a sicko imagination to have come up with these stories but yet, they seem so real. Is this fiction or this stuff really happened? I was scared to read about the character named Rex since that is my name too; I won't say more; you must read it yourself, ohh!
Vicki Hendricks' Florida Gothic Stories is a treat for anybody who likes noir, erotica and Florida. Set in various locations in the state, from the Everglades to the Keys, these stories ooze the flora, the fauna, the floozies and the crackers of that state in a way Carl Hiaasen would find admirably familiar. "Gothic" is a great word to describe these stories, full of horror and romance, the greed of the human heart, and the just plain weird. The story "ReBecca" involves the rivalry of two Siamese twins joined at the head; "Stormy, Mon Amour" is about the love between a woman and a dolphin - and their offspring; "Cold-Blooded Lovers" a man and his iguana.
As may be gathered already, Hendricks has a sly sense of humor that's also gothic with its implied sense of awe and mystery. Take the opening line of "Cold-Blooded Lovers." "The day he flushed his meds and bought a dress for his iguana, Gregory Waxman's real problems were over." How can you read that line and not feel a dark chuckle in your throat?
Hendricks is also known for her erotica, and these stories are fine examples. "ReBecca" was previously anthologized in Best American Erotica 2000," but I found the most erotic writing involved the love between the protagonist and her dolphin lover in "Stormy, Mon Amour," and if that isn't a trick of gothic legerdemain I don't know what is. The noir tale called "The Big O," featuring the 2006 Tropical Storm Beryl, is a noir tale of murder and jealousy set near Lake Okeechobee, from which the story takes its title -
and there's no need to spell out the other meanings of "Big O," is there?
Read these stories for their humor, their intrigue, their hot sex and Florida atmosphere. Just don't read them for moral lessons and any sense of justice!
