This past summer, America watched helplessly as it happened repeatedly unarmed black men shot, choked, often killed by fearful white officers. When television cameras and reporters descended upon Ferguson, Missouri to cover protests and rioting after a police officer shot 18 year-old Michael Brown, pundits who hadn't heard of Ferguson a week earlier filled the airwaves pontificating about the root causes. But one question went unanswered What about St. Louis’s history, economics, politics, leadership structure, and culture set it apart from the myriad other cities and towns that quietly endured similar tragedies? In this Single, urban policy professor and former Missouri State Senator Jeff Smith explores the roots of Ferguson's rage – and offers insights on how other cities can address their own simmering issues of racial and class inequality so that they can avoid the reckoning St. Louis faces.
Jeff Smith is Assistant Professor at The New School's Milano Graduate School, where he teaches and researches urban political economy, election campaigns, legislative strategy, and incarceration. His first book, Trading Places, analyzed modern party realignment; his next book explores prison life. He frequently addresses audiences on public ethics and prison reform. Jeff has written for the New York Times, the New Republic, the Atlantic, Inc., Salon, Politico, and New York Magazine, among other publications. Previously, he represented St. Louis City in the Missouri Senate.

Ferguson in Black and White Single edition by Jeff Smith Politics Social Sciences eBooks Reviews
Jeff has written a short but solid background of the history and politics of St. Louis's racial divide in general and Ferguson in particular. The book spends only a little time on the Mike Brown case and instead looks at the decades of social and economic challenges that St. Louis's African American community has faced. Various twists in urbanization and segregation policies in the early 20th century lead to the dynamics of a very divided community. It's a quick read that provides good information.
This is an awesome book, it gives you an insight of what is really going on in Ferguson. The government report that was recently released has nothing on this book. I'm sure there were things that didn't come out that are in this book
Very good explanation of how St. Louis became what it is today based on our history and background.
Interesting point of view.
Insightful, relevant, helpful in gaining a perspective about the current reality all over the country, having been spawned in part by the death of Micael Brown and the collective community frustration and reaction to the news of "No True Bill" by the Grand Jury. The history of the region, an explanation for the breakup of St. Louis City and St. Louis County, his powerful analysis of the economic conditions in St. Louis County, revealing a government funded in fees on the backs of the poor are spelled out with clarity. The author's academic credentials and his tenure of service in the Missouri State Legislature as a Republican, make his accounting of the Ferguson circumstance all the more credible and compelling.
it was good, too short, but generally good
Smith provides helpful background on the structural barriers and systemic inequality leading up to the tragic events surrounding Ferguson. His prose is clear and highly readable. Loved that it ends with tangible policy solutions. I flew through this book!
