Based on the true story of a naïve young woman who falls victim to the charms of a smart, handsome and sexy college boy who becomes her abusive (but addictive) husband, this is a romance gone bad. Only through the unwanted efforts of her overly protective family and their questionable connections does she find freedom, independence and eventually love.

Wait, wait. C'mon, an opportunity to critique a former English teacher's writing? Too tempting to resist! In 1978 I was lucky enough to have Teresa Taylor for my English teacher at Brooklyn Technical High School for my entire freshman year. In my senior year I was privileged to be enrolled in her advanced placement English class. I still remember her correcting my overuse of the word "basically". I have lived in fear of the word ever since. [Ms. Taylor, if you read this, I'm the little redhead girl who gave you and antique pin when you went on sabbatical] Were it not for her stealth tutelage would I have the confidence to post here so boldly? Or be the upstanding member of Goodreads that stands before you today? I dare say not! Seriously Ms. Taylor, thank you. [and not just for the leg up on Jeopardy ;)]. Thank you not only for being an exceptional teacher but also a role model. And thank you for writing this book, allowing me a little more time to enjoy your company again after all of these years. It was such an unexpected pleasure!
And now for the book:
A timeless tale, remarkably well told. What woman hasn't met a guy with at least one of Joseph's heinous qualities? Ms. Taylor's vivid, forthright, breezy style is clearly evident throughout this book, while simultaneously doing a stellar job of detailing Kitty's vulnerability, innocence and journey to become a healthy confident woman.
One of my personal pet peeves with books is that quite often, despite creating a well written, intriguing story, I find the author falters in ending them.
I am proud to say that Ms. Taylor does not disappoint. She delivers a deftly-crafted, well-timed ending that left me wanting more, even though I knew the real Kitty far after this story ended.
"I know he didn't lick those good looks out of a bowl" Best. Line. Ever. Kept me smiling for days.
The eloquent depiction of characters and food left me homesick for the Brooklyn of my youth, and transported me back to those quiet, early mornings as a young girl at Brooklyn Tech, in the administration office before school began, when Mr. Feger, after punching in, used to tug my ponytail to say good morning.
Brava Ms. Taylor! And Godspeed! Say hello to your adorable husband. I think of you whenever I get a sweet whiff of vanilla, and I always smile.

Family Matters Teresa Taylor 9781499190090 Books Reviews
Good story well told. I would have liked to know more about what came next as the story stopped too abruptly. waiting for the sequel!
Riveting book with interesting characters. I could not put it down.
Superbly crafted.
A fast-paced coming-of-age tale of the incremental stages of abuse attraction, addiction and denial; into awareness, courage and hope... measured with levity and vivid characters.
Very readable, fast moving novel. It is inhabited by quirky characters. Strong protagonist whom many women will identify with. I thoroughly enjoyed it.
couldn't put the book down. Felt the pain of the writer. a fast and compelling read. Truly recommend the book
Teresa Taylor has a way of telling a story so that you want to turn the page and find out what is waiting to happen to KIt next. You will enjoy meeting her aunts and uncle Frank and it may remind you of family close to you from your own childhood or teenage years. Kit endures and survives, but the toll it takes is apparent in her life.
The book is an easy read and moves fast, it keeps your attention and your curiosity. Get this book and you won't help but wish you knew Kit personally.
You don’t choose your family. But you can choose your loved one. In Teresa Taylor’s novel Family Matters these realities reach terrifying levels. Kit is a bright, insightful young woman whose extensive Italian family dots on her with infinite care and support. They crave her happiness as their own. Surely she will find someone who will fit a family that matters. She does not. Instead, Kit falls for Joseph, handsome and charming -- elusive and controlling. Bad enough he’s an outsider, but when he morphs from lover to violent abuser -- someone must pay.
Uncle Frank, the family patriarch, is a man of connections and quiet power. It is after all Brooklyn, and he is Italian. He will not stand by and watch his niece be a victim. Never.
The author leads the reader into the trap -- the one trap Kit must accept -- and the one she allows herself to be swallowed into Uncle Frank who starkly represents the novel’s title -- and Joseph who has this relentless hold on her, body and soul. The reader wants to warn “For all that is safe and sane, dump this guy!” But a part of you is taken in by his charm and his struggles. Sadly, victims feel they must forgive and love on. In this rare case, strangely, the victim must protect the loved one from an uncle who could bring calamity. Or maybe permanent peace heavily ladled with its guilt. For many readers this will be far more than an enticing story. The mental scars of abuse last lifetimes even as the physical ones heal.
The novel is linear, not forcing the reader through a gigantic leap-frog plot that sends him to places and characters from past to present and back again. The style is tight and elegantly phrased. There is rich detail of Italian culture and daily city life, while always revealing character and plot development. This is a book to become lost in -- or one to help find yourself.
